Ah – the October Surprise.
It is the last second development that can swing in an election. Most assume it is a scandal, such as George W. Bush's DUI leak in 2000. Or, a major promise such as Richard Nixon's "peace agreement" with Vietnam.
It does not always have to be negative. So with that in mind, I have a theory on Obama's October Surprise that could clinch the selection.
On Friday, October 31, he will announce endorsements from Gen. Colin Powell and Sen. Chuck Hagel. Both have been heavily rumored to endorse Obama; however, neither have pulled the trigger as of yet. The endorsements would be pretty devastating for McCain – especially late in the game.
Both are strong Republicans who are military heroes and carry a lot of weight. This is especially true for Powell, who's endorsement would be very significant this fall. The endorsements would bring moderates from both parties to Obama and could help him with members of the military.
Hagel is very respected by members of both parties, and despite his connection to the United Nations testimony prior to the Iraq War, Powell is still very popular and respected nationwide by Americans. These two endorsements would help Obama lock up the election.
With them coming late, it would be tough for McCain to respond adequately.
