With that said, I am absolutely astonished of the latest development with Bush ordering an envoy to travel to meet the Iranians. This comes weeks after referring to Obama (not by name) as someone who appeases to the Islamofasicists.
After years of trading insults with Iran, the Bush administration is trying a gentler approach, a tack that produced results in dealings with two longtime U.S. adversaries, North Korea and Libya.I could see this working both ways politically in the Obama-McCain race. First, Obama could claim some victory since the Bush Administration is now officially speaking with the Iranians, something Obama expressed his desire to do.President George W. Bush is sending a top envoy to multinational talks in Geneva tomorrow that will include Iran, the highest-level discussions between the two countries since Iran's Islamic revolution in 1979. The administration is also considering stationing diplomats in Tehran for the first time since then.
But I could also see it as a McCain victory. There are a handful of people I know who would vote for McCain for sure if not for the prospect of invading Iran. A peace deal would remove the fear of McCain's foreign policy and could bring more voters.

It is simple bigotry that Iran is not being allowed to develop atomic weapons. Why shouldn’t an Islamic hereditary theocracy be allowed to build I.C.B.M.s?
A nuclear middle-east will be a peaceful middle-east because of Mutually assured destruction. Mutually assured destruction kept the peace between the United States and the Soviet Union for decades.
Atomic bombs are defensive weapons because they make victory impossible for anyone.
Nuclear proliferation is going to happen sooner or later any way.
Technology always spreads. Gunpowder was invented by the Chinese, but now everyone has it. Even the most isolated illiterate tribesman carrys an assualt rifle when he goes to war.
In the future, every Mullah, Latin American Generalismo, and African Warlord will have the ability to hurl nuclear weapons at one another. But, they will also be threatened with the same thing coming back at them. War shall become obsolete and peace shall prevail.
